Copying and editing items

You must make a copy of a publisher item before editing it. When you do, a message informs you that the copy has been made and that it is now one of your My Items "".

To copy and edit an item:

  1. From the Mastering Instructor Course Home page, make sure the book containing the item is the book associated with the current course. The book is identified in the bottom right corner.

To select a course based on a different book/source: Select My Courses from the menu (left) and choose a course based on another book.

  2. Select Item Library from the menu (left).
  3. Use the source selection menus (top) to find content specific to a particular book/source, chapter, section or concept within a chapter, or learning outcome.

  5. Select the title of the item you want to copy and edit.

The item opens in Standard View (what students see).

  6. Select Copy and Edit from the Manage this Item menu (top right).

By default, the copied item opens in the Simple Editor. You’re encouraged to make most of your edits to copied items using the Simple Editor, because of its ease of use and because it’s more universally supported on different browsers.

  7. [Optional] To use the Advanced Editor, select Open Advanced Editor (top right).
Note that the Advanced Editor has stricter system requirements than the Simple Editor.

    1. Highlight the title text and enter a new title. Be sure to delete "Copy" in the title before you save the final version of the item.
    2. [Optional] Select and edit the text in the Description to fit the new item you're creating. Students don't see descriptions but they display with items in the library, so use wording that helps differentiate this item from others.
    3. [Optional] Select and edit the text for the Learning Goal, to inform students about this item. To add a goal if one isn't there, click the add LearningGoal link. To remove an existing goal, delete all of the text.
    4. [Optional] If you're creating new variables or modifying existing ones, add or change variable definitions.
    5. [Optional] Select and edit text for the Introduction, to give students the context of the item. You can format text, add images, and add other media files to the Introduction.
    6. While working, save your changes frequently by selecting Save in the Item Editor toolbar. The item changes to Standard View. You can also see this view by choosing Preview in the Item Editor toolbar.

See Editing saved items for the next time you want to edit this saved item.
